A mid century ceramic table lamp designed by Aldo Londi for famous Italian ceramicists Bitossi, likely in the 1960s.
Bitossi pieces are sought after, especially those dating from the 1950s-1970s. There are several different design ranges for their ceramics, designed by Italian ceramacist Aldo Londi.
They can also be difficult to identify. While we can never be be 100% certain, there’s a few different signs when looking out for an original Bitossi. This example has been hand painted with brush strokes visible, while the base is slightly rough. The term “Italy” has been hand carved into the base (see photos), all telltale signs of a Bitossi original. It also has the word “Foreign” hand painted onto the inside, rather than an official Bitossi makers mark. This isn’t unusual however, as many Bitossi pieces were made on behalf of other retailers, who wanted to retail the items as their own rather than Bitossi’s, so were just marked Foreign without a trace of a maker’s mark. Finally, the design itself has been cross checked with others online which have successfully been identified as original Bitossi pieces.
This example features an autumnal colour palette with an intricate, textured repeat pattern. It’s a rare opportunity to own a stunning piece of ceramic art which also doubles up as a practical table lamp.
We’ve fully rewired the lamp and it’s also been safety tested.
